| Poker Origins...
The Origins of Poker seem to date back to the an ancient Persian
game card named 'as nas'. The Persian game was played with hands
of five cards and recognized pairs, trips, four of a kind and the
Full House.
The game 'as nas' dates back to the fourteenth century and was
played by four players using a 20 card deck, with four suits called
Lions, Ladies, Kings and Dancing Girls. There was no flop in the
game and hands were bet as dealt and then shown. It wasn't until
a 32 card deck was introduced in America around 1820 that more than
four people could play at one time.
The popularity of Poker began in the Southern States of America
and developed quickly as players adapted rules from other card games
to make the modern rules for poker that we know today. Many elements
from the English game 'Brag' were used to make poker more a game
about bluffing and skill, than a game of chance.
