Multi Table Tournaments...
Multi Table Tournaments (MTT) are one of the most popular ways
to play poker and many online poker rooms offer them as a staple
of the site. Playing in tournaments requires play that differs from
single table or cash games as the number of opponents is much higher,
the games are generally longer and picking up on tells can be more
difficult.
The
structure of these games is very straightforward. Each player pays
a set amount known as a buy-in in exchange for a seat at the table
and each player starts with the same number of chips. When a player
busts out he leaves the table and the tables merge to ensure that
all have the same number of filled seats. This continues until there
are nine remaining players at the final table to battle it out for
the winning pot.
MTT's are definitely more exciting as you can often see the number
of remaining players whittle down as you play and there really is
no feeling like getting to the final table - the mark of a great
player. However, there are a number of things to look out for:
- Early round play can be manic with a lot of the poorer players
gambling at every opportunity - avoid this if you want to progress!
- Blinds will go up fast so you need to build up the chips to
see the game through
- Style of play will change as the rounds progress - loose early
round play will become very tight as players start nearing the
money.
Many sites now give pay-outs up to 27th place depending on how
many players entered the tournament and though it is great fun -
they are hard to make money from so enjoy them and learn from
them but don't think you can retire on them - unless you're a professional
that is!
