WSOP ( World Series
Of Poker )Tournaments..
The World Series of Poker first started in the Riverside casino
and was an invitational only poker tournament. Prior to the 1970s
poker had an image of a smokey back room game played by dubious
characters, but tireless promotion by the WSOP and many top casinos meant that the game eventually made it into main stream entertainment.
Participant numbers
in the WSOP has grown year on year. In 2000 the WSOP had 4,780 entrants
in 2005 that number was close to 23,000 poker players. The main
grew from 839 in 2003, to 2,576 in 2004, to 5,619 in 2005.
Much of this growth can be attributed to the WSOP airing on major
U.S. cable channels, big prize funds and the growth in online poker.
In 2003 Chris Moneymaker won the main event after qualifying through
a $39 satellite tournament at the PokerStars!. He took home a coverted
WSOP bracelet and $2.5 million in prize money. After winning the
WSOP, he quit his day job to become spokesman for WSOP owner Harrah's
Entertainment and online poker room PokerStars.
